About the Cambridge & District Table Tennis League
What is the League?
The Cambridge and District Table Tennis League exists to provide
competitive table tennis in and around Cambridge, and to encourage
table tennis generally.
Constitution and Rules
What competitions does the League provide?
Our principal competition is the League itself, which runs from late
September to early May each year. The League is open to all-comers,
and contains over fifty teams split into five divisions, playing
up to 22 matches in a season, plus the chance to enter a Handicap Knockout
Tournament. Teams meet from as far afield as St Neots, St Ives, Haverhill,
Saffron Walden, Ely, Newmarket and Soham as well as Cambridge and the
surrounding villages.
A one-day
Closed Championship is held once a year, providing events for
all standards of players. A Summer League is held in the close season.
How are teams organised?
The league consists of a number of clubs, each of which has a contact
such as the club secretary. Each club enters as many teams as it wants
into the league; the number varies from 1 to 8 according to the size
of the club.
What happens in a match?
A team consists of three players (though we insist that at least four
players are registered for each team, to ensure reserve cover). In a league
match, each player plays a singles set against each of the three opponents, making
a total of nine sets. At the end of the evening, each team chooses two of
its players to take part in one doubles set, which brings the total number
of sets played in the match to 10. Each of those sets won counts as one point
to be added to the team's league total. In a handicap knockout match, each
player is handicapped individually, and the nine singles sets are played according
to those handicaps. In order to remove the possibility of a drawn match, no
doubles set is played.
How do I organise a club?
Clubs can be organised as formally or informally as you like, but you
will need the following:
-
A club secretary. This can be simply the name and contact details of the
person running the club.
-
A venue with a table tennis table, available for home league matches on
the night or nights of the week on which your teams will play.
Away matches are played on the home night chosen by the opponents.
How do I arrange matches?
The league publishes a handbook each year setting out the schedule for all
league matches, so all you have to do is to turn up on the appointed date.
On occasions it may be necessary to postpone a match, in which case it is the
responsibility of the teams concerned to ensure that the match is rearranged
and played. In the knockout tournament, the participating teams are informed
of the dates, opponents and venues (i.e. home or away) in each round.
